14 year old Fernando is one of the most enthusiastic students in his school gardening club. He is part of a team from the Special Educational Needs department, who have been developing a vegetable garden in a disused space behind their building. He has built a compost bin, created natural fertiliser and sown seeds.
‘I come here every week because I like gardening. My family had a small farm before I came to the UK. The club is fun. I like to exercise and make new friends. I want to see more animals around our garden. We can’t kill nature because it’s very delicate. If we kill plants, we won’t have any food. It’s important to me that the plants don’t die.’
